It is very powerful for your team to win both ends of the start, which allows you to protect both sides of the race course.

His mission, more or less, is to find out-of-the-way, hard-to-reach areas where VHF radio communications are typically poor, and utter the words, “Can you hear me now?”

Beat the Wrap

Many furling gear problems can be traced to one simple cause. The last thing you want from your furling gear is for it to jam up in a rising breeze – or at any other time, come to that. I must be some kind of roller-reefing Jonah, because it’s happened a few times on boats I’ve been sailing aboard. On two of those occasions, halyard wrap was to blame. http://tinyurl.com/4ysbww

SailDawg Vic in Belize

9 June 2008

Here is SailDawg Vic, from Michigan, who took his family for week’s charter in Belize the last week in May. The boat is a 40′ cat made by Robertson & Caine from South Africa. They chartered from the Moorings, out of Placencia, Belize. Those two small islands are in an area called the Queen Cayes, just a few hundred yards from the barrier reef. A little extra wind from the tailend of a hurricane, but a great trip.

Walt and Millie - SailDawgs from Mission Bay Say:

5 June 2008

My Viking saildawg buddy and I sail out of Mission Bay in San Diego Monday and Fridays regularly in my ‘83Cat30 “Charisma”. We sail about 5nm out and back depending on the wind. We are retired engineers and cannot get over how few sailing vessels we see, if any! I realize the weekend makes a difference but we are curious about what percentage actually sail instead of using their vessels for dockside dining and drinking, since many are retired.

Also Eric “the Great” sails by the wind in his face I presume using the ears mostly. He feels this separates sailors from drivers. How many sailors do this instead of using the usual compass and telltales as I do?

~Walt
